On 7th April 2019, SSIO volunteers from the Sathya Sai Center of Detroit Metro partnered with Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach program to clean the local beach. The Great Lakes coastal zone encompasses some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the region and provides critical habitats for many species of plants and animals. It is estimated that more than 22 million pounds of plastic are discarded in the Great Lakes every year, which threaten the natural habitat of plants and species and drinking water for 40 million people.

More than 30 SSIO volunteers including SSE students, their parents, and SSE teachers joined other volunteers and collected approximately 400 pounds of trash in just two hours. The volunteers also collected specific data about the litter, which will be used by scientists to develop solutions to pollution around beaches and coasts. This project raised awareness in the SSE children about the dangers and extent of plastic pollution. Children and adults also had a positive experience of connecting with nature and became aware of the environmental degradation of Mother Earth.
