On October 9, 2024, the SSSIO-USA Northern California Region held a vision camp at the Stockton Homeless Shelter. Fifteen volunteers assisted 80 attendees with basic eye exams and distributed reading glasses. Many were grateful for restored vision—such as a 60-year-old man reading food labels again and a 71-year-old resuming his computer studies. The most requested glasses were of power +3.0, indicating older attendees with vision needs. Attendees expressed profound gratitude for the eyeglasses, particularly those who had lost or damaged their previous pairs. A 60-year-old man was delighted to read a milk carton label effortlessly, while a 71-year-old found renewed ability to study his computer programming textbook. A woman rejoiced at being able to see her family photos clearly on her phone. The event also highlighted the need for Spanish translators and more comprehensive vision care.
