During the Memorial Day retreat in May 2024, more than 50 Sai volunteers from across the Northeast Region, USA, worked on the community garden at the Sai Unity Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. They cultivated fresh produce for local food-insecure households and the Minuteman Community College students. SSSIO volunteers had established six raised beds and a fence in 2023 when the project started. In 2024, they set a more ambitious target of adding 12 more raised beds and an upgraded irrigation system. Meticulous planning and teamwork were vital for the project’s success, such as procuring essential materials, including wood, soil, seeds, and tools.

Through June 2024, Sai volunteers, including SSE students, worked diligently to construct and fill the garden beds. Families from food-insecure households worked alongside Sai volunteers to learn about vegetable gardening and care for their new community plot. Joy and enthusiasm filled the air as the families discovered the rewards of growing their food. The community gardening service surpassed all expectations, cultivating a strong community spirit while encouraging sustainable living.
