SSSIO members in New Zealand participated in the ‘Nature in the City’ Arbor Day Tree Planting event in Hamilton, New Zealand, from May 30 to June 1, 2024. This initiative aimed to boost the city’s native vegetation cover from a current 2% to a target of 10% by 2050. To commemorate 20 years of planting and restoration efforts at the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, an ambitious goal of planting 20,000 native plants has been set for this year.

Schools and corporate sectors were invited to participate on May 30 and 31. Community groups, families, and individuals contributed to the planting on June 1. Four volunteers from the Hamilton Sai Center joined the event, which the Mayor of Hamilton officiated. It also featured a special guest, a renowned entomologist and ecosystem restoration advocate, Ruud Kleinpaste, popularly known as the ‘Bug Man,’ who shared his expertise and answered questions.
