The Matura Beach in Trinidad & Tobago is an important sanctuary and popular nesting site for leatherback turtles. On March 5, 2023, 85 SSSIO volunteers participated in a National Beach Cleanup Day event organized by Nature Seekers, an award-winning environmental group. Their mission: to clean up Matura Beach, a scenic shoreline revered for its ecological significance but often marred by pollution and debris.
Volunteers collected over 2,500 kilograms of garbage and debris to restore a clean environment for the turtles to continue their centuries-old lifecycle safely.
