On Saturday, 27th August 2016, 20 Young Adults from the Sathya Sai Centre of Toronto-York participated in a project sponsored by Habitat for Humanity to build a home for an impoverished family. Habitat for Humanity is an internationally known organisation that collaborates with community partners to build affordable housing for low income families and promotes home ownership to break the cycle of poverty. The Young Adults worked in teams under the direction of professional volunteers and construction experts. After safety training and a review of construction site etiquette in the early morning, they cleared debris from the construction site, installed guards and railings for newly installed steps, and installed a vapour barrier in the roof. In the afternoon, everyone worked together to insulate the entire house. The activity truly embodied Sathya Sai’s message of serving selflessly. The Young Adults felt grateful and blessed for the opportunity to volunteer, and expressed interest in returning to help again. The family chosen to receive this home, a single mother with four children, gratefully received keys to the house on 7th November 2016. Upon entering their new home, the family gathered to pray and thanked God for the bountiful blessings He had showered upon them. They joined 18 other families across the Greater Toronto Area celebrating new beginnings this season due to the selfless work of dedicated volunteers and Habitat for Humanity.
