As part of the Sai 100 Tree Planting Initiative, on August 20, 2023, twenty-four SSSIO volunteers in Auckland joined in a massive community effort to plant 2,500 trees at the Shakespear Regional Park, one of Auckland’s most visited nature reserves. The day’s activities, organized by the Auckland Council and Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society, were part of a broader ongoing community effort to plant 10,000 native trees annually over 3-4 days; the goal – to restore biodiversity and a variety of natural ecosystems, and create suitable habitats for reintroducing native flora and fauna. Working alongside other community volunteers in this major restoration project, SSSIO members felt gratified to serve both their community and Mother Nature.
