On January 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano in the South Pacific erupted, covering the island nation with volcanic ash, cutting off electricity, and paralyzing communications. A tsunami triggered by the blast ripped across the islands of Tonga, causing flooding and widespread damage and making the island uninhabitable. SSSIO members of Zone 3 jumped into action immediately and provided humanitarian relief. They supplied nonperishable food and subsidized the cost of rebuilding homes lost or damaged.
