Volunteers from Sri Sathya Sai Center in Mesa, Arizona, partnered with “A New Leaf”, another non-profit organization, on a project called “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).” This initiative offers tax assistance for people earning less than $57,000 a year, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and non-English speaking people. The volunteers undergo intense tax law training and are certified at the “Advanced level” by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The VITA activity is well organized, serving more than 3,700 households, while following Covid-19 protocols. An elderly beneficiary who has received help from the VITA initiative for four years said, “I am happy that the volunteers are attentive, help me understand the tax return preparation, and are punctual with appointments. I am really grateful.” Another recipient of assistance in VITA stated that it puts her mind at ease during these challenging times.
