As part of the global Serve the Planet initiative, SSIO volunteers organised coastal clean-up campaigns around Sri Lanka. On 4th April 2018, 45 SSIO members, along with the Thambiluvil Pradeshya Sabah, the local government authority, cleaned up the beach area between the villages of Thambiluvil and Thirukovil. Volunteers from local Sathya Sai Centres joined with 73 villagers and residents of Nehrupuram to collect and remove three truckloads of plastic waste from the beach. The endeavour was greeted with much enthusiasm by the Public Health Inspector of the area, the government officer in charge of the village, and board members of the local waste management authority. Volunteers were also inspired regarding taking care of the environment.
