When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, SSIO volunteers in Seattle, Washington sprang into action to make homemade masks to help healthcare workers on the frontlines. In just three weeks, over 400 masks were distributed to various healthcare facilities, and around 100 masks were made from kits provided by hospitals and clinics. Volunteers meticulously prepared the masks according to specified guidelines, and painstakingly checked every mask to ensure that there were no defects. As of mid-May 2020, over 900 masks have been donated by the volunteers, who plan to deliver hundreds more in the future.
