Since September 2024, members of the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Manhattan have been bringing birthday cheer to patients of the Memory Care Unit at Coler Specialty Hospital by visiting them on the last Saturday of the month. Working with the unit’s recreation therapist, SSSIO volunteers identify patients with birthdays and celebrate the birthdays by creating personalized cards and bringing a birthday cake to cut in a room adorned with balloons. When familiar music is played, many patients get up excitedly to dance. For many patients, especially those with paralysis who rarely receive visitors, these celebrations offer much-needed joy, personal connection, and relief from loneliness.
Lizette Jaffri, vice president of the Manhattan Center, shared that it was truly a blessing to spend time with the residents, who are touched by being remembered and cared for by the volunteers.
