On 21st July 2018, SSIO volunteers organised their first Health Awareness Day at a medical practice in Central London. They sought to inspire the patients to increase their health awareness and prevent diseases like diabetes. Many non-English speaking patients with a high rate of diabetes attended the event from economically challenged areas in London. About 40 volunteers helped with diabetic risk assessments, registration and other activities. All visitors had their blood pressure, height, weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI) checked along with a doctor’s consultation. SSIO volunteers partnered with local charities to provide facilities for exercise and yoga. The 41 patients found the day extremely useful and appreciated the resources available. Additionally, feedback from the general public was both positive and encouraging, recognising the dedicated and loving work of the SSIO volunteers.
