On 9th October 2017, Hurricane Maria affected the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, destroying many houses and about 80 percent of the crops. Responding to the need, more than 100 SSIO volunteers from Trinidad and Tobago travelled to the island with relief materials in February 2018. Within four days, the volunteers rebuilt 19 houses in different parts of the island, bringing much-needed comfort in the aftermath of the hurricane. Inspired by the selfless service of the SSIO volunteers, 75 additional volunteers joined in the service activities assisting the local population.
