Every spring and autumn, volunteers from Zone 8 of the Sathya Sai International Organisation (SSIO) serve food to hungry and needy members of their communities. Stretching over thousands of miles, this project offers a great opportunity to the participants to experience unity and divinity. During 9th to 20th October 2016 SSIO volunteers in 52 cities of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan joined their brethren to serve food in public places, including churches, markets, bus stops, railway stations, and in the streets. Volunteers also distributed food in the homes of indigent families, homeless shelters, and facilities for the transient. About 230 SSIO members and 21 other volunteers helped prepare and distribute food to more than 1,000 people in Zone 8. In addition, Sathya Sai volunteers also distributed warm clothes, shoes, toiletries, stationery, and other items, along with hot food, in response to the needs of the local people.
In Azerbaijan, meals of pilaf, salad, fruits, and vegetables were served to 22 disabled residents of a nursing home, with love and gratitude. In Kazakhstan, volunteers served tea, pancakes, pies, sweets, and cakes to about 100 elderly residents of a nursing home. They also decorated the dining room with balloons and entertained the elders with songs from the past, in Russian and Kazakh languages. The group also distributed soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, gel, aftershave, deodorant, lotion, stockings, and cups. In Belarus, on 14th October 2016, SSIO volunteers served stewed potatoes, buckwheat, pasta with vegetables, bread, soup, sandwiches, pancakes, pastries, sweets, and pie to needy elders, in observance of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin and Mother’s Days. The volunteers felt grateful for the opportunity to serve, and blessed with peace, harmony, love, and goodness.
