The seventh annual Fiji-Australia Sai Medical Camp was held from 18th to 23rd August 2013 in Fiji, under the leadership of Dr. Gunu Naker, Dr. K. Nadanachandran and Dr. Saras Nandan, assisted by 42 volunteers from Australia, one volunteer from New Zealand and eight volunteers from Fiji. The first day was dedicated to continuing medical education at the University of Fiji, on women’s health. Several lectures were given and medical papers were presented by attending scholars.
Over the next five days, the team of visiting and local medical volunteers, assisted by 40 medical students, drove to remote village schools and set up medical camps. A total of 2,480 patients were registered and 3,337 medical consultations were provided in the areas of general medicine, vision, general dental, dental prosthetic, children and women’s health, nursing, neurosurgery, medical education and pharmacy. In addition, over 750 pairs of spectacles were distributed. The local Sathya Sai volunteers helped with the camp operations, and attending medical students received practical clinical training. The camp organisers gratefully acknowledged the assistance provided by several dental, eye, and health organisations and medical, drug and healthcare firms.
