On April 13, 2024, SSSIO volunteers of the Southwest USA region contributed to the SSSIO One Million Trees initiative by planting 32 fruit trees on the Jemez Pueblo land. This was a joint effort with the Jemez Pueblo members and the Bodhi Manda Zen Center. SSSIO volunteers donated saplings of fruit trees that were hardy enough to thrive in the arid conditions. The Pueblo people generously provided compost, while the Forest Service donated bark mulch. The Pueblo members also pre-dug the planting holes with a tractor and auger, making the process efficient.
It was an uplifting day of cultural immersion in age-old, divinely inspired values and customs, including a gathering circle for Tewa prayers and a traditional Butterfly Dance to bless the trees. It was a testament to the power of collective action and the beauty of interfaith harmony as they shared in the joy of giving back to Mother Earth as one unified community.
