SSSIO-USA Mid-Atlantic Region partnered with a public library in North Bergen, New Jersey, to hold a free health fair for nearly 400 individuals in need on December 9, 2023. Many of the beneficiaries were undocumented, uninsured, and underserved individuals. The event was a collaborative effort involving the township, local hospitals, and more than 20 social service agencies, with SSSIO physicians and volunteers actively participating.
Ten volunteer physicians from a wide range of specialties, and mental health therapists provided one-on-one consultation. Staff from local hospitals provided basic health screening services such as blood work and explained the results to patients. Two SSSIO members, cornea and retina specialists, provided free eye testing. Free eyeglasses were distributed, many to children with vision impairments.
Social services agencies provided health-related information and resources. The event included free meditation and yoga classes to deal with stress and anxiety, as well as information on acupuncture and smoking cessation. Uninsured individuals received information on free clinics.
The nonprofit organization Hoboken Family Planning inaugurated a new state-of-the-art mobile van that offered pap smears, mammograms, and HIV testing.
