Since 2015, Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) students of the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Seattle Eastside have been participating in the Shoe Box project. The project is organized by Samaritans Purse, which distributes these shoeboxes filled with gifts and essential items as Christmas presents to needy children worldwide.
This year, the SSE students put together 96 boxes for 2 to 5-year-old girls, each containing a comb, a toothbrush, hair ties, a jump rope, a coloring book and crayons, a stuffed toy, pencils, socks, and a personal greeting card. Even pre-SSE children helped pack the boxes, make Christmas cards, and put stickers on them. Assembled boxes were dropped off at a local church for being shipped overseas.
A parent commented, “It is an opportunity for children and adults alike to feel a sense of unity and reduce the feeling of aloneness during the pandemic. It teaches the children to be grateful for everything they have in their lives.”
