Volunteers from the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Lexington, Kentucky give back to their community by volunteering at the Backpack Food program. Since many children in the area come from impoverished homes, they often go hungry during the weekends or holidays. The Backpack Food program distributes backpacks containing nutritious and non-perishable food to sustain needy children during weekends and holidays. Food items were delivered every month, for over three years. From serving a single school, the program has expanded to delivering mac and cheese, cereals, soups, energy bars, snacks, and fruit cups to more than one hundred students in three different schools. Although the volunteers drive long distances to distribute food in rural counties, they are thankful for the opportunity to serve the children in need.
