Since September 2019, the Sathya Sai Centres of the Greater Boston area including, Boston, Chelmsford, Norwood, and Northborough, have collaborated with the Lowell General Hospital (LGH) Social Work Department to support 25 low-income families of cancer patients. SSIO members provide a week’s worth of groceries including hygiene supplies, frozen food, canned food, cleaning supplies and snacks, once a month, to help these families. The volunteers are touched and humbled to see the tears of gratitude in the eyes of the recipient families, who in turn, have expressed an immense sense of gratefulness for the help received during trying times. Mrs. Heidi Parker, an Oncology Social Worker at the hospital, stated, “The patients and their families have been totally overwhelmed and extremely appreciative of the amount and quality of food received. Indeed, they were astounded by it. And I have got nothing but positive feedback.” SSIO volunteers have continued this service, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, through online purchases and deliveries.
