In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, hundreds of SSIO volunteers continued to participate with great zeal in home restoration efforts, including the mucking and gutting of mould-infested walls, and the removal of damaged floors and debris. The hurricane had devastated the lives of 13 million people in five states in southern USA and damaged over 200,000 homes. Since 2017, volunteers have continued to restore homes in Rosharon, Texas, in collaboration with several local community agencies and service organisations. SSIO volunteers have also distributed more than 8,000 pounds of rice and vegetables, 500 blankets, 600 hygiene kits, 30 air mattresses, 200 bedding sets, 100 baby items (such as diapers and wipes) and 500 school items (such as bag packs and stationery) to about 100 families during a two-year period.
A community leader, Paul Boeur, praising the effort of SSIO volunteers, said: “We appreciate your help. We particularly appreciate the many volunteers from your group who have served in our community, including the team from New Jersey who had travelled so far to help us.”
