On 6th October 2018, more than 1,100 members of the local community joined the Wairau Valley Special Needs School, the Wilson School and many satellite schools for the third annual Special Needs Children’s Day Out. The landmark event was organised by the SSIO of New Zealand and the Kaipatiki Ward of the Auckland City Council. A wide array of activities was organised to engage the children, parents and care givers, including skating and multi- cultural entertainment and music. Eight agencies, including PHAB (an inclusive organisation that promotes self-reliance for people with disabilities), Autism NZ, Dyslexia Support, and others provided valuable assistance to the parents of children with disabilities. The local Member of Parliament was in attendance as well. Encouraging feedback was received from all participants and the Auckland City Council expressed their desire to continue supporting the special event.
