On 14th October 2017, 292 SSIO volunteers in 55 cities across Zone 8 served food to more than 1,300 people in need and 16 animals. This service project – organised in Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan – is conducted every spring and autumn. The recipients, despite their difficult circumstances, helped the SSIO volunteers set up the venues. In Kazakhstan, volunteers served the needy in temples and on street corners. In addition to serving food, SSIO members distributed soap and disposable razors and provided medical services. In Kyrgyzstan, Sai community members served delicious hot meals with potatoes, gingerbread, sweets, and hot tea, while overjoyed recipients expressed warm gratitude for the delicious homemade meals and the loving care and support. In Belarus, volunteers not only served food to nourish the body but also nurtured the mind through inspiring conversations with the needy about the importance of purity of thought. The service activity, coinciding with the Orthodox holiday of the “Intercession of the Theotokos,” a feast of the Mother of God celebrated in Byzantine churches, brought immense joy and satisfaction to everyone involved, including the recipients.
