On September 1, 2024, the Central Region of SSSIO, Sri Lanka, initiated the planting of 350 Leyland cypress trees in the Pidurutalagala mountain range, the highest peak in Sri Lanka. Ten members from the Talawakelle Sai Center joined hands to plant the trees. The cypress trees thrive in temperate climates and grow up to 40 meters tall. They provide aesthetic appeal, prevent soil erosion, and offer valuable wildlife habitats. In addition, they serve as natural windbreakers and privacy screens.

The planting was intended to enhance the landscape and protect the Agricultural Department’s Seeds Research Centre from strong winds. Cypress trees also play an essential role in the economy, as their timber is durable, and their branches are used as Christmas trees. However, illegal actions such as cutting trees for Christmas decorations have threatened their population. This initiative helped maintain the beauty of the hillside, raised awareness about conservation, and contributed to environmental benefits such as erosion control, natural carbon removal, and preserving habitats for birds and animals.
