The extreme heat in Houston, Texas can be fatal, especially for the disabled and elderly. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, over 650 people die annually from heat-related causes. SSIO volunteers from the South Houston Sathya Sai Centre participated in the Beat the Heat community programme, the brainchild of Congresswoman Ms. Sheila Jackson Lee. On 14th July 2018, 12 SSIO volunteers installed air conditioners, contributed by local businesses and agencies. The Congresswoman profusely thanked the volunteers who installed the much-needed air-conditioners, while the SSIO volunteers were grateful for the opportunity to bring relief to vulnerable community members.
