During 4th–11th October 2014, SSIO medical teams performed 23 uterine fibroid surgeries and more than 10 hysterectomies at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice, Guyana. Many of the patients had been waiting several years for medical attention, and their fibroids were large, with multiple adhesions. Hence, some surgeries lasted well over two hours, but every surgery was successful. The Minister of Health of Guyana, the Honourable Dr. Bheri Ramsarran, and the Chief Medical Officer of Guyana, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, helped organise this project, including locating a suitable hospital – the New Amsterdam Hospital. The hospital staff and local medical professionals assisted the SSIO medical team with the surgeries.
